Recycling
The City of Savannah began its curbside recycling program in January 2009. Savannah is recycling with a new technology, single-stream, allowing all your recyclables to go into one 96 gallon cart. To help the City with its recycling effort, here's what you can put into your cart:
- aluminum
- steel
- plastics #1 through #7
- glass
- newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard
- magazines
PLEASE make sure to:
- rinse your recyclables with a SMALL amount water
- Keep plastic bags and styrofoam out of your cart
- Do NOT put food, household cleaners/hazardous waste, or yard waste in your cart
- Bring your recyclables to a nearby recycling facility if you are not a City of Savannah resident with curbside privileges (see a map of facilities at www.savannahga.gov)
Recycling makes a big difference on the amount of waste going into our landfill, but you can't forget about the other 2 R's: Reduce and Reuse. You can reduce strain on the environment by buying local, purchasing products with less packaging, and buying energy efficient appliances and electronics.
Reusing items, rather than relying on disposable products, is an even better way to be green. Buy a set of canvas grocery bags, pack your lunch in sturdy, washable containers, and consider buying used items rather than brand new. If you own reusable items you no longer need, like furniture and working electronics, consider donating them to a local charitable organization.
